Recently my students and I have been thinking about the internet, anonymity, and identity, and how we should navigate all these ideas. Below are three articles that I found interesting (one of which we read in our Advisory Session last week):
What a new Internet might look like is still widely debated, but one alternative would, in effect, create a “gated community” where users would give up their anonymity and certain freedoms in return for safety.
And two articles by Sarah Perez:
“How to Friend Mom, Dad, and the Boss on Facebook…Safely”
It’s still up for debate how much personal information you should share with others on your Facebook profile. Some people would argue that the time for us to hide behind our masks is over.
It seems we’re approaching a new age here on the Internet. Instead being anonymous, faceless IP addresses, social computing and changing technologies have allowed the lines between the “real” world and the “virtual” world to blur.
